Instagram Tips & Tricks | iPhone Photography App

Posted on 13 October 2011 by Liza Mae V.

In my previous review about Instagram for Beginners I discussed the basic info about Instagram and my likes and dislikes.  Since then Instagram has launched a new update which has taken on a new look which I will review and also show you how to get more likes, comments, and followers.

Instagram Share Print Screen with Icon breakdown

Instagram Updates – Summary of Features

  • Preset borders with filters are now optional – Though this is an improvement from the previous version, you still can’t use any border with a filter.
  • 3 new filters added – Amaro, Valencia, & Hudson
  • 2 filters removed – Gothem & Apollo, good choice for those are filters that were specific and personally I didn’t use often.  I’m glad Instagram developers are paying attention.
  • Editing screen is all in one – There is no need to jump from the tilt-shift screen then back to the filter screen.  It can all be done in one shot.Instagram Editing Print Screen - Choose a Filter

Instagram Tips & Tricks – Get more Instagram Followers

  • Get noticed, use hash tags # – If you are a Tumblr or Twitter user, you can post tags by inserting hash tags like #iphoneography #photo, etc.  Hash tags that you previously used will appear.Instagram - Include a Hash tag
The only thing I don’t like about this feature on tumblr is that it adds the hash tag  it to the description.  I wish instagram removed the hash tags in tumblr.Instagram posted on Tumblr with Hash tags
  • Get personal and reply to your comments – If you want to respond personally to comments on your instagram feed, write @username, just like Twitter.  When you put @, instagram propagates your contact list, making it easy to search for the person you are replying to.  Instagram is NOT like facebook where it will send you a notification if someone commented on a photo.
  • Take picture with the Camera app – The problem with taking pictures with instagram is that the maximum resolution it saves images is 612×612 pixels.  If you want to do more with the photos, like print, edit, create a desktop image, resolution will get lost.  I usually use Camera+ to take all my photos.
  • Use the filters, borders, or tilt shift to take pictures – If you are taking the photo with instagram, there is an option on Instagram to take the picture with filters, borders, and tilt shift and what’s good about it is that it isn’t permanent.  That’s right, you can change the filters even though you used a certain filter to take the photo.

Behind the May 2011 Desktop Calendar Wallpaper on LuxaVision

Posted on 01 May 2011 by Liza Mae V.

I designed May 2011 desktop calendar wallpaper on LuxaVision and it is getting quite the traffic and it really excites me to see such progress in such a short time frame.  I created this on PhotoShop CS4 – I know I should upgrade to CS5 but haven’t gotten around to it.  It is one of those things on my to-do list but isn’t on high priority, so it happens on a random day like today.  I was just gonna go to Timothy’s to relax and have a coffee with my MacBook Pro after a property showing and I walked by the Riverdale Mac store (which had such friendly and helpful staff – much better than the Apple store where it smells like foot funk) and it triggered a thought that I should get quote on how much it would be to get my DVD reader/burner replaced, which was a little bit more than I wanted to spend and made me inquire about upgrading my RAM.  This was something on my to-do list as well and thought the best time is now!  So I upgraded from 2GB to 8GB RAM awesomeness which will be 4x as fast!  I thought it was more important than a burner for I am on my MacBook Pro majority of my day and I burn a CD/DVD a few times a year.  So back to my point, I will eventually get to upgrading to PhotoShop CS5 but probably wait until CS6, knowing me, I mean I read that there aren’t significant changes between CS4 and CS5, so I’m not in rush, unless someone tells me something really cool about CS5 compared to CS4.

This is the May 2011 desktop calendar wallpaper but can be downloaded as large as 1440×900, just visit LuxaVision, or click on the image below to be redirected.

Behind the Scenes | Newborn Photography of Baby Kyla

Posted on 14 March 2011 by Liza Mae V.

I have been excited about shooting newborns since my first ever shoot with Baby Ayrianna.  It is something I am passionate about and whenever the opportunity strikes, I get an immediate high.  I used to think that newborn babies looked the same but after shooting them, you start to see the little features that resemble their parents, siblings, and other family members.  On this day of the shoot, I met Baby Kyla’s mother Karolina B. (whom I went to elementary school with), father, brother, grandparents, and great grandparents.  It was great energy having four generations around and seeing how different features transfer from generation to generation.  I get close up look at the baby, so I can distinguish where they get their small lips, coloured eyes, nose, hair, etc.

This is the behind the scenes look of my photo shoot of newborn baby Kyla, pictures courtesy of Karolina B.  This was taken in Baby Kyla’s grandparent’s home.  My main source of lighting is natural lighting on my left and I usually have a bean bag for the baby to pose comfortably on.  I have learned a lot from this shoot in terms of essential equipment to bring, number of looks on a shooting day, what baby poses work best, and many more (which I will talk about in another post – TBA).  If you need a newborn baby photographer or know anyone who is expecting, referrals are welcome.

My Journey | Leave it All Behind to Live Life to the Fullest

Posted on 09 June 2010 by Liza Mae V.

It is my last day in my birth place, Bacolod City, and I am not anxious to leave at all. I feel my time here has just begun and now it is ending … for now. Many people back in Toronto believe that I’ve been away a long time but 3 months isn’t very long when you are having fun. The adventure has to start somewhere and this is just the beginning of the journey.

When I first arrived I did not know what to expect nor did I know what I was going to do. So whenever any one had asked ‘when’ or ‘where’ I was headed, I had no answers for them because all I knew is that I go back to Toronto, Canada on June 20th, 2010 from Shanghai, China. I booked my flight to Manila the night before and the same for Bacolod City. Now I have booked my flight for Manila yesterday and will be leaving tonight at 8:25pm. It seems things have been moving faster than I anticipated but I learned to let the wind blow and let my heart follow.

The first few weeks I was here I thought things moved so slowly here but I realized I was so used to things moving so quickly that I didn’t know how to keep my mind still. Sometimes when life is fast-paced you don’t really have time to think or appreciate your days. Consumed in my 9 to 5 or more like 7 to 6 Mondays to Friday, I never really had time for myself and being in a place where things are slower I have become more aware of my surroundings and realized how beautiful life is. I used to dread waking up in the morning but now I wake up refreshed at 6am because there is so much beauty to experience that I just don’t want to miss out on living.

As I gaze through my friends photos on Facebook of their 1 week vacations costing thousands of dollars and compare my 3 month mini-retirement which probably cost about the same, I would always choose the latter. I don’t believe going away for a week is an actual vacation for when you get back to work, your workload just piles up and once again you become stressed out and overworked. With companies limiting the number of employees, most likely the amount of time you were away equates to the amount of work you have missed therefore your ‘vacation’ is just a distant memory which you want to relive. I say why make it a distant memory when you can decide to live that life daily. That is our current goal – to live life to the fullest!

Though this chapter is ending, a brighter chapter is ahead.

Simplicity of Life

Simplicity of Life

Posted on 14 May 2010 by Liza Mae V.

I have climbed mountains, jumped islands, and swam in fresh water. I’ve never quite experienced the world like this and it is simply amazing.

Mambukal Falls

A few months ago I was drowning in numbers at my cubicle, counting minutes until 5pm, and worked myself to exhaustion.

Who would have thought my life would change so drastically?

I was drinking coffee from Timmies costing $1.50, now I am drinking fresh coconut juice or even better mango shakes for less than $0.50. Who wouldn’t want to trade their life for this life I am currently savoring?

Many seem to delude themselves into believing that they need millions to enjoy life but what I’ve been experiencing is that a dollar can stretch a long way. It is not about how much money you make, but how far you can make your money work for you.

What is the point of making so much money when you don’t know what you are going to use it for? Our societies need for more is deceptive and dubious. We already have everything we need, we just WANT more but ask yourself, why is there that need?

A simple life goes a long way. Try living it.

with this ring … I thee wed

Posted on 26 August 2009 by Liza Mae V.

What is the purpose of a wedding ring? Why do we wear it on the left hand on the 4th finger, also known as the ring finger?

with this ring ... I thee wed

“In some countries, the wedding ring is worn on the left hand. This choice of finger relates to traditions purportedly dating to classical times, from an early usage reportedly referring to the fourth finger of the left hand as containing the vena amoris or “vein of love”[5]. At least in part due to this tradition, it became the norm to wear the wedding ring on this finger. By wearing rings on the fourth finger of their left hands, a married couple symbolically declares their eternal love for each other. This has now become a matter of tradition and etiquette in these countries. However, the most widely accepted explanation is that because the majority of people are right-handed, wearing the ring on the left hand makes it less likely to be damaged or lost during everyday activities.” –  Wikipedia

Snap in to it

Posted on 15 October 2008 by Liza Mae V.

So I’ve been meaning to start my photography “stuff” for months now but it was put on hold due to my life changes. Now that I am on stable ground I can go back to my photography as I envisioned. I have to put a business plan in place but one step at a time.

Things to do (not in order) …

  • Build LizaMae.com Website
  • Work on Portfolio
  • Print Business Cards
  • Work on Pricing
  • Build Clients
  • Buy (Apple Laptop, Lighting equipment)
  • Improve photog skills

That’s all I can think of right now.  I’m surely on my way and back on track!
